Community Involvement
Volunteer program - Work with local garden clubs, or the Botanic Gardens to help plant and maintain the planters. This is a great example of bringing community partners together to beautify the city. Using volunteers could be a way that more planters and other projects could be added because of the power of volunteers.
On-line polls and a blog - Ask the neighbors to get involved. They can request a planter in their area, or request a specific type or color of plants. They can report damaged planters. On-line polls are a quick way to get feedback on a variety of aspects of the beautification program.

Buy a Planter
Aren't we always looking for the perfect gift for a loved one or friend? A planter purchase program could be the answer. Planters can also be purchased for memorials. In both cases a plaque would be attached to the planter with a message of your choice.
Hanging Baskets, Window Boxes, etc
For areas with limited space for planters, as in the case of a sidewalk that is less than 6 feet, consider hanging planters.
For areas with an abundance of space, as in the case of a sidewalk that is more than 20 feet, consider creating a parklet, or plaza.
Another option are window boxes. They can be used effectively in areas with limited space at the walkability and amenity zones.

Year-Round Planters
Instead of abandoning the planters in the wintertime, why not use then for holiday decorations? A winter display of art sculptures could also step in to fill the planters in the winter.
